Thrice to Rome

THRICE TO ROME

A special event in the Cathedral to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Gerallt Gymro, aka Gerald of Wales, aka Gerald the Welshman, aka Geraldus Cambrensis.

On the evening of Friday 6th October, during UK Libraries Week, we are delighted to present a dramatisation of the three attempts by Gerald in the Papal Court in Rome between 1201 and 1203 to argue his case for being rightly appointed Bishop of St Davids, and also for St Davids rightly being a full metropolitan Archbishopric independent of Canterbury. Using Gerald's own words, Prof Norman Doe, Director of the Cardiff University Centre for Law and Religion, has authored this drama of Wales v England, St Davids v Canterbury, European politics and of a Welsh campaign that achieved success 700 years later.
